Artist Statement
I grew up in the southern and Midwestern United States. I have always been active in the creative visual arts in one way or another. I love textiles. I love art on a size and with a texture that invites the viewer to reach out. I have created my dolls with a deep respect for women and the typical materials and resources available to women through out time. My dolls are all sewn by hand, stuffed with rice, lentils, and some cotton. The are made with fabrics rich in value to me. The colors and textures of the fabric lend a vitality to the dolls I have not found in other media. I enjoy crafting these dolls; I enjoy the connection I feel with all the women who have come before me and, out of simple scraps, created the figures that entertained children, gave vision to our unique perspectives and helped articulate our feminine mythologies.
